Port of St. Augustine in 1754
A vital hub for Spanish colonial trade, military supply, and regional communication in Florida. Strategically located on the Atlantic coast, it connected St. Augustine to Havana, Spain, and other key ports. It also served as a defensive stronghold against British incursions and pirate threats. As one of the earliest established ports in North America, it played a crucial role in maintaining Spain’s foothold in the New World during the 18th century.

The Great Cross at Mission Nombre de Dios
St. Augustine honors Father Francisco López de Grajales, the chaplain of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. On September 8, 1565, Father López celebrated the first Catholic Mass in what would become the United States, marking the beginning of Christianity in the country. The towering 208-foot Great Cross, erected in 1966, commemorates this moment and stands as a powerful symbol of faith, exploration, and the Spanish legacy in Florida. It rises over the site of the original mission, where Father López ministered to Spanish settlers and native peoples alike.
