SK Customs is proud to introduce the fourth edition of the Mexican War of Independence series, Presidente Vincente Guerrero.

Guerrero, the second President of the Mexican Republic, joined the fighting forces of Morelos to battle against Spain early on in the war for independence. During his presidency, Guerrero famously abolished slavery in Mexico.

The son of a Spanish loyalist, Guerrero was asked for his sword to be presented to the viceroy of New Spain as a sign of goodwill. In response, Guerrero refused saying “LA PATRIA ES PRIMERO” (translated, The Homeland Comes First). This phrase is still referred to today as the motto of the Mexican State of Guerrero and is written in gold letters at the National Palace.

Morelos was captured and executed in 1815, causing Guerrero to join forces with Guadalupe Victoria and take on the position of Commander and Chief of the rebel troops. When the Spanish viceroy offered amnesty, Guerrero refused. He continued the rebellion through an extensive campaign of guerrilla warfare, taking victories at Ajuchitán, Santa Fe, Tetela del Río, Huetamo, Tlalchapa and Cuautlotitlán.

Hoping to stop the rebellion, the royal government sent Augstín de Iturbide to oppose Guerrero’s forces. Guerrero was victorious against Iturbide, who realized there was a military stalemate. Following this epiphany Iturbide abandoned his royalist loyalty in 1821 and joined forces with Guerrero to fight for independence, leading to the historic event of Abrazo de Acatempan (translated, embrace of Acatempan). The two men allied under the Plan de Iguala, their forces merging as the Army of the Three Guarantees.
