SK Customs is proud to introduce the fifth iteration of the Mexican War of Independence series, featuring Miguel Hidalgo, the “Padre de la Patria,” translated as “Father of the Nation”. Limited to only ONE of 200 Colt 1911s chambered in .38 Super.
Miguel Hidalgo played a pivotal role in initiating the Mexican War of Independence against Spanish colonial rule. Born in 1753 in Guanajuato, Hidalgo was a well-educated priest known for his progressive ideas, intellectual curiosity and advocacy for social reforms. He challenged traditional norms by teaching indigenous and mestizo populations practical skills, like farming and winemaking, which directly opposed Spanish economic restrictions.
Hidalgo’s role in the independence movement emerged from his deep frustration with the injustices faced by the lower classes under Spanish rule, including heavy taxation, land dispossession and racial discrimination. Inspired by Enlightenment ideals, he became involved with a network of conspirators planning to overthrow Spanish authority. When the plot was discovered in September 1810, Hidalgo acted swiftly to launch the uprising earlier than intended.
On September 16, 1810, in the small town of Dolores, Hidalgo issued his famous “Grito de Dolores,” which translates as the “Cry of Dolores,” calling for an end to Spanish rule, the redistribution of land and equality for all people in New Spain. This passionate call to arms galvanized thousands of indigenous and mestizo followers, forming a massive but untrained insurgent army.

Though Hidalgo lacked military expertise and his campaign faced significant setbacks, his leadership ignited a movement that would continue for over a decade. Today, he remains a national hero in Mexico and is celebrated annually on September 16 as the symbol of independence and resistance.
