SK Customs is proud to announce its second production in the “Conquerors Series.” Commemorative to Conquistador Hernán Cortés, this is a limited-edition production is of only 200 Colt 1911s in Royal Blue chambered in .38 Super.

Hernán CortĂ©s is best known for leading the conquest of the Aztec Empire. There were moments of relatively peaceful and even cooperative relations between him and the Aztecs, particularly during the early stages of his expedition. Then under the leadership of Emperor Montezuma II, the Aztecs received CortĂ©s in 1519 with curiosity and caution. Montezuma believed CortĂ©s might be linked to the god Quetzalcoatl, whose return had been foretold in Aztec prophecy. This belief contributed to Montezuma’s decision to welcome the Spaniards into Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital.

Upon entering the city, Cortés and his men were housed in a palace and treated with honor. Montezuma offered gifts of gold and allowed Cortés to stay as a guest, demonstrating a willingness to engage diplomatically. During this time, there was an exchange of ideas, religious beliefs and cultural practices. Some Spaniards were impressed by the city’s advanced infrastructure, markets and social organization.

Cortés also made use of interpreters, notably La Malinche – a Nahua woman from the Mexican Gulf Coast who became known for contributing to the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. She helped to communicate effectively and build relationships. Through her, he was able to understand Aztec customs, political dynamics and religious beliefs, which helped avoid immediate conflict and foster early cooperation.

Although these peaceful interactions were short-lived and eventually gave way to violence and conquest, they show that Cortés’s relationship with the Aztecs was not solely based on hostility from the beginning. There were initial attempts at diplomacy and mutual understanding, which played a crucial role in shaping the early phases of contact between the two civilizations.
