Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla in 1862, where a vastly outnumbered Mexican army, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, achieved a remarkable victory over French forces. Cinco de Mayo marks a triumph: a symbol of resistance, unity and national pride.

France, then ruled under Napoleon III, was seeking to establish a monarchy in Mexico and install Maximilian of Austria as emperor. With one of the strongest militaries in the world, the French aimed to swiftly overpower Mexican resistance. General Zaragoza, a determined and strategic leader born in the then-Mexican province of Texas, rallied 4,000 ill-equipped Mexican soldiers in the city of Puebla. This force was destined to face a well-armed force of 6,000 French troops.

Despite the odds, Zaragoza’s troops held their ground by using superior tactics and the element of surprise. Their victory not only stunned France but inspired Mexican resistance across the nation. Though the French would eventually capture Mexico City, the Battle of Puebla became a powerful morale booster and a defining moment in Mexican history.

General Ignacio Zaragoza, who tragically died of typhoid just months after the battle, is remembered as a national hero. His words, “Las armas nacionales se han cubierto de gloria” (translated: “The national arms have been covered with glory”), still echo with pride today.

Cinco de Mayo remains a celebration of Mexican resilience, culture and courage, in Mexico and across the United States. We celebrate this day with a limited edition ONE of 500 high-polished royal blue Colt 1911 chambered in 38 super.
