Background
On July 9th, 1985, President Ronald Reagan signed under Title II of Public Law No. 99-61, the “Liberty Coin Act”, introducing the American Eagle Silver Proof Coins in Collector versions of the official United States Bullion Coins and are only available in the one ounce size.
The obverse design of the American Eagle Silver Proof Coin is based on Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 Walking Liberty half dollar.
Since the release in 1986 until Early-2021, the reverse depicted a Heraldic Eagle with a Shield, grasping an Olive Branch in the right Talon and Arrows in the left. The design, by John Mercanti, symbolized Strength and Endurance, atop of the Eagle are 13 Stars represent the Original First 13 States of our Nation.
