Chambered in .45 Colt, this extraordinary rifle is Serial Number #14 and is one of just 15 rifles created in this extremely limited custom engraving series. These rifles began as carefully selected Winchester 1892 Deluxe Short Rifles, with particular attention paid to examples displaying the exceptional Exhibition Grade 5/6 American Black Walnut worthy of a project at this level.
The centerpiece is the magnificent hand engraving. Both sides of the receiver carry deeply cut Western wildlife scenes surrounded by extensive scrollwork and framed with genuine 24K gold wire inlay. The right side features a dramatic Bighorn Sheep scene, while the left side depicts a Whitetail Buck, Doe, and Fawn in a woodland setting. The underside of the receiver is embellished with a detailed Bull Moose medallion, also surrounded by engraved ornamentation and a gold border.
The engraving doesn’t stop at the receiver. Additional hand-cut scrollwork appears on the trigger, forend cap, and other selected surfaces, while fine gold accent bands at the receiver and muzzle beautifully tie the entire rifle together. The contrast between the deep polished blue, subdued engraved backgrounds, bright gold borders, and richly figured walnut is exceptional.
These rifles were hand-picked specifically for their exhibition-quality Grade 5/6 walnut. The stock and forend on Serial #14 display tremendous figure, with deep contrast, strong fiddleback and flowing grain that changes dramatically with viewing angle. This is the kind of wood normally encountered only on very high-grade presentation firearms.
The rifle retains the classic configuration that makes the Winchester Model 1892 one of John Browning’s most admired lever-action designs: a handy 20″ barrel, tubular magazine, crescent-style steel buttplate, traditional lever action, and beautifully proportioned Deluxe furniture.
This is not factory roll engraving or laser decoration. The major decorative work was individually hand cut, with genuine gold wire laid into the steel. Small variations from rifle to rifle are therefore part of what makes each example unique.
Serial #14 remains NEW IN THE BOX and comes from our climate-controlled inventory. Please study the photographs closely – the images below show the actual rifle being offered today.
